There is one issue that has been near and dear to my heart for over 5 years. The issue at hand is the proposed wind turbine farm to be built in Nantucket Sound. I know, I know. How does this crazy, liberal girl not support wind turbines? They help the environment! They help reduce our dependency on foreign oil! They're amazing! Not quite.
One reason that I am so involved in the protection of Nantucket Sound is not because I'm an elitist (although I've been accused of this) or because I have the "Not In My Backyard" syndrome. I'm against this wind farm because Nantucket Sound is similar to another place I love, Monterey Bay. Nantucket Sound has been deemed qualified as a National Marine Sanctuary. Some of the federally protected species in the Sound include leatherback sea turtles, loggerhead sea turtles, Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles, and grey seals. I agree that there should be alternate sources of energy in this country. But I don't agree that it should come at the expense of losing a piece of natural beauty that has been approved as a National Marine Sanctuary. Once Nantucket Sound is gone, it's gone forever.
